Kerry Moffit - La Boutiellerie, Fontaine-l'Évêque, Belgium.

This picture is from a jam session I attended at La Boutiellerie, a small family owned bar/restaurant in Fontaine-l'Évêque, Belgium. The owner is Pierre Patiny.

One day, I'll re-order pages in this section and insert the next several pages before the "Bebop Scale" pages. Until then…..

This page will be a bit longer than the others to allow me to present some very basic scale patterns. In the instance below, it's a 4 note pattern that inverts at the top and returns to the beginning. Of course, the downloads are in all 12 keys 😄. The example below isn't a live link but you'll find all versions of the exercise linked beneath it in bass and treble clefs.

And of course, please consider making a small donation to maintaining this web site. It's a labor of love for me but, of course, takes a spot of money to keep it going. Trust me, there is no requirement whatsoever to do so and I have no plans to shut the site down!

Basic 4 note pattern.

This example above is based on C major. Due to the length of the exercise, I cut most of it out of the example.

Major - Treble Clef | Bass Clef
Dominant - Treble Clef | Bass Clef
Natural Minor - Treble Clef | Bass Clef
Harmonic Minor - Treble Clef | Bass Clef
Dorian - Treble Clef | Bass Clef

Now for something different, here are two scale patterns based on the lydian mode. This mode is based on the 4th scale degree of the major scale and features a raised 4th. When constructing chords, we generally refer to this as a 111 (i.e. the 4th scale degree + 1 octave). This alteration is featured predominantly in major and dominant chords. The first is a straight lydian scale. Be careful to observe the key signature as there are no accidentals to guide your practice. The second is lydian dominant and features both the raised 4th (based on the key signature) and lowered 7th. One of these days, I'll add these to scales to the basic scale page.

Lydian - Treble Clef | Bass Clef
Lydian Dominant - Treble Clef | Bass Clef

Students.... don't look for the easy path to success because there isn't one. It takes time and effort to succeed in any endeavor. Music is no different. Continue to the next page for some thoughts on practicing.
